13.7.2021 | TikTok Announced the Removal of Over 7 Million Underage Accounts from Its Platform

TikTok, The short-video social-media platform popular among the young adults has announced that it has removed more than 7 million accounts belonging to children under 13 during the first quarter of this year, taking a significant step in enforcing the required age of users on the app.

On 30th June, for the first time, TikTok has revealed that more than 11.1 million accounts were removed for violating the app’s guidelines and 7.26 million of them were from users suspected of being under the legitimate age to use the app.

In the U.S., internet sites are required to obtain parental permission before collecting data on children under 13, according to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. But many kids fudge their age and create accounts across social media sites from Instagram to YouTube. Whether this move by TikTok would be effective and could halt underage children from creating TikTok accounts by lying about their age? Only time will tell.
