According to The Verge – WhatsApp is developing a Communities feature which lets administrators unite group chats under a large group and it will soon be more similar to Discord servers.

For  an example, you could have a top-level community chat with smaller group chats tied to it. Which means that – you could have a community for a college course with study group chats linked to that parent group.

All of the chats are said to be protected with end-to-end encryption. Admins could invite people to join the community either manually or by sharing an invitation link. The overseers of these groups would also have tools to manage a given community. However, further details have not been announced at this stage.
